About

Yasmeen is Arab Hispanic American and grew up loving raqs, or “bellydance.” She learned it socially from family as a child, frequently dancing at weddings and in living rooms. She wanted to learn more, but only with the right teacher. After finding Phaedra Darwish's classes in 2021, she quickly became dedicated to studying and honoring the art of raqs sharqi. She joined Phaedra’s dance troupe, Il Worood Il Beledi, and performed across Chicago at cultural events.

In no time at all, friends began to request she perform at their parties and shows. Having a lifetime of love for the dance and being trained by a phenomenal teacher, she naturally became a soloist. Her grace and thoughtfulness are her most frequently noted strengths.

She commits to a mentality of stewardship. She values joy and authenticity. She views joy not as escape but as embracing life. She defines authenticity not by rigid rules or purity but by genuine connection and integrity.

She shares her reflections on her blog. Not only did she grow up loving the dance, she also enjoyed reading all the ‘00s bellydance blogs! She offers a unique perspective as someone raised between multiple cultures and speaks multiple languages.

Alongside her values and commitments, her goal is to expand how this art form is seen and understood, especially as part of the Arab diaspora. She is available for bookings in respectful, inclusive settings. You can find more info on bookings here.
